At Seminole EMS, we are committed to enhancing the safety and well-being of our community members. One critical aspect of this mission is ensuring rapid access to Automated External Defibrillators (AEDs) during emergencies. Our AED Registry serves as a vital resource, linking AED locations, trained responders, and sudden cardiac arrest (SCA) victims.
What is an AED?
An Automated External Defibrillator (AED) is a portable, life-saving device designed to treat people experiencing sudden cardiac arrest.
Why are AEDs Important
- Time Sensitivity: Sudden cardiac arrest is a leading cause of death in the United States, affecting over 350,000 people annually. The only way to restore a regular heart rhythm during cardiac arrest is through defibrillation.
- Response Time Matters: First responders typically take 8-12 minutes to arrive after a 911 call. For each minute defibrillation is delayed, the survival odds decrease by approximately 10%. Having access to an AED and knowing how to use it is critical.
Why Is the AED Registry Crucial?
- Time Matters: Cardiac arrest strikes up to 350,000 victims annually in the US, with up to 85% occurring outside hospitals. Rapid defibrillation significantly impacts survival rates.
- Dispatcher Knowledge: Our 9-1-1 dispatchers play a pivotal role. Knowing the precise location of nearby AEDs extends their effective coverage range from 50 feet (direct line of sight) to 600 feet (available within a brisk minute walk).
- Community Involvement: The new AHA guidelines encourage citizen volunteers to assist before EMS arrival. Dispatcher awareness of AED locations empowers them to guide callers to nearby devices.
